As this school year winds down, New Hampshire educators are gearing up to recruit their staffs for next year. Dover officials began advertising two months earlier than usual to get a jump on the competition. In Berlin, officials already have looked to Canada for new teachers.
This month State Department of Education officials are expected to declare "critical shortage" areas. That gives schools flexibility in hiring teachers without the credentials usually needed.
script iconCoast Guard Cuts
Return to index of stories...
New Hampshire's seacoast will feel the effects if The Coast Guard cuts some patrols due to budget deficits. The agency blames higher fuel costs, salary raises and the need to replace aging equipment. Local Coast Guard officials say unless an emergency funding bill gets through Congress, cutbacks could reach 25 percent by month's end, just as boating and fishing season begins.

Return to index of stories...
Today, family and friends remembered former New Hampshire Governor Meldrim Thomson at a private funeral. The two-hour service was held at the Baker River Bible Church in Wentworth, the Thomsons' family church. Thomson, the ultraconservative flamboyant governor who served from 1973 to 1979, died Thursday at age 89.
A public memorial service will be held Friday at the Statehouse. The 10 AM service in Representatives Hall will be webcast on our website at NHPTV.org.

On Friday, the Judicial Conduct Committee released its findings that Supreme Court Chief Justice David Brock committed serious judicial violations. That JCC was investigating the administration of the court by the chief Justice and how the court dealt with behavior by former Justice Stephen Thayer.
The JCC stated. "The committee finds that the distinctive status accorded the office of the Chief Justice carries with it an extraordinary responsibility of leadership and accountability, not always satisfied during the recent past."
The JCC recommended the Chief Justice be admonished. Brock accepted the decision and in a press release said.
"The last year has been a very stressful and very difficult one for me, my wife, my family and the entire judicial branch of government. The time has come to put this matter behind me so that I can continue to devote my full energy and attention to the critical work of the court."

Brock was impeached by the New Hampshire House last year and was later acquitted in a trial by the New Hampshire State Senate. Now two members of the JCC who cast dissenting votes on the committee decision have spoken out about the way in which that decision came to be. Joining me on the phone one of those members Terry Pfaff of Manchester - he's a Manchester firefighter and state representative.

When asked for a reaction from Chief Justice Brock to statements by JCC members,
a court spokesperson said as part of the resolution, it was agreed that no one would make any statements. Because the Chief Justice made that agreement, he will stand by that.

If you want to be at the center of the Universe, you might want to stand at the centroid of New Hampshire.
According to the US Census Bureau, New Hampshire's population is centered around a parking lot right outside of Kendall's Market on Route 3 in Pembroke.
This population centroid has been moving from Canterbury to Pembroke because of the southeastern population shift.
One official says, while the information isn't of much practical use, the new center of gravity shows that our capital is in the right place to focus on the people of this state.
